History & Theory Editorial Review
The Prince by Machiavelli is a highly recommended book to read by the readers. The translation by Harvey C. Mansfield is praised for being easy to read. The critical apparatus provided in this edition is very helpful for the readers to understand the material and the historical context in which it was written. The historical context is important as Machiavelli refers to historical events and things that were happening in his own time. This book provides valuable lessons about leadership which still apply today. The analogies he uses for the historic leaders help us to translate his messages into messages we can understand. Despite some readers not agreeing with all of Machiavelli's advice, they acknowledge its importance and the value it offers. One reader even found some nuggets of dating advice in it.
